The Coffee That Got Cold

Two people sharing a table, having two completely separate experiences.

On the left - the man in the too-blue suit and pink tie. Green-tinted sunglasses so you can't see his eyes, hand under his chin like he's posing as thoughtful, but his other hand is just hanging limp off the chair. Bored. Performing. He brought his coffee and forgot to drink it.

On the right - the woman. Yellow bob, red lips, bright blue earring, and that enormous, almost armor-like costume necklace with pink and blue jewels. Green top, hot pink skirt. She's done the work to be looked at. And she's looking away. Not at him, not at us - past us. Her coffee is also untouched.

Between them: a tiny round cafe table that's way too small to hide the distance. Two white cups. No steam.

And behind them that flat, violent red sky and a black city skyline - no detail, just a burnt ochre ground. It feels like late afternoon in a city that's too hot and too loud. You get the sense they agreed to meet here, maybe a blind date, maybe a long marriage that has become a blind date.

It's not about hate. It's about "modern alienation". Being dressed up, sitting close, and being utterly alone. The humor is in the exaggeration - the noses, the hands, the jewelry, the sunglasses - but the sadness is real.

That's why it sticks. Everyone has sat at that table once.
